OU to Pay $500,000 to Settle Lawsuit With Burned Student

Ohio University will pay $500,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a student who was burned and disfigured in a campfire during a class wilderness survival trip. Mance originally sought $3.2 million in damages, alleging the Athens university was negligent when it required him to camp by himself despite knowing he was an epileptic. Mance claimed he suffered an epileptic seizure on May 28, 2006 while attempting to rekindle his campfire during a recreation studies course outing at Vinton Furnace Experimental Forest in Vinton County. Mance fell into the campfire, suffering burns to his face and head, arms and hands. He lost most of his nose and parts of his ears and has undergone numerous surgeries. [Columbus Dispatch]
